About Alsómégy-Homokmégy

The area of today's Sand Mountains consisted of water-logged flats and beaches a few meters long, streams and veins crossed the countryside in all directions. The ancestors who settled here learned to use and appreciate the gifts of nature. The Őrjeg swamp also meant protection from outside attackers. Many people found refuge in the swamp during the Tatar invasion and the Turkish occupation. Compared to other areas of the country, the emigration was less spectacular, as evidenced by the significant amount of archaeological findings. The center of the village, which consists of six settlements, is Homokmégy, and the associated accommodations are Alsómégy, Hillye, Kiskecskemégy, Halom and Mácsa.
The first mention of Sármégy, the predecessor of Homokmégy, dates from 1198. The remains of an Árpád-era church were found in the probable location of the medieval settlement, 500 meters from it in the 10th-11th century. century public cemetery. The family graves of the first generation of the occupiers were excavated at the Halom accommodation. Homokmégy belongs to the flood plain of the Danube, its important agricultural areas were created in the drained parts of the Danube's tributary. In addition, the village and Őrjeg together with its marshes, meadows, and parts of the forest are living nature itself.
